Judy AddingtonLemon Essential Oil

Judy Addington, L.M.T., C.R., C.C.I.

There has been much research on lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil around the world. One of the benefits is to promote clarity of thought. Researchers found by diffusing certain aromas, mental accuracy and concentration improved greatly in an office setting. When diffused, lemon resulted in 54% fewer errors, jasmine 33%, and lavender 20%. During test taking, diffusing aromas increased scores by as much as 50%. How's that for improving brain power?

Citrus aromas have been found to boost immunity (stimulate an increase of white blood cells), induce relaxation, reduce depression, and show benefits in skin care. They've also been shown to have an effect on bacteria. There are other uses for these oils too.

Lemon oil seems to affect the digestive, immune, and respiratory systems the most. Suggested use: diffuse, apply to reflex points, or apply to area. Be aware it can cause skin irritation; dilute if necessary with vegetable oil 1:1 (olive oil is a good choice). It is generally regarded as safe (GRAS) for internal consumption by the FDA, add 1 drop to water (not in a plastic container), or add 1 drop in 1 tsp. honey or 4 oz. of beverage. Do not use with children under 6 years old, and dilute with children over 6.

Note: Do not apply directly to the skin if you will be exposed to sunlight or UV light within 24 hours.

As with any oil, use only therapeutic grade essential oils for medicinal uses/benefits.
