FINGER MUDRAS FOR RELAXATION
Marita Aicher-Swartz, MA
A Mudra (Sanskrit word meaning sign or seal) is a gesture or position, usually of the hands, that locks and guides energy flow and reflexes to the brain. By curling, crossing, stretching, and touching the fingers we can “talk” to the body and mind as each finger area corresponds to a certain part of the mind or body.
- The thumb represents the element of earth; the stomach and worry.
- The index finger represents the element of metal; the lungs, the large intestine and the emotions of depression, sadness, and grief.
- The middle finger represents the element of fire; the heart, small intestine, circulatory and respiratory systems, the emotions of impatience and hastiness.
- The ring finger is the element of wood; it is connected to the liver, gall bladder, the nervous system, and corresponds to anger.
- The little finger corresponds to water, kidneys and fear.
When overwhelmed by an emotion gently stroke or squeeze the corresponding finger. Take a few gentle breaths, close your eyes, and think of something positive or good!
Quick Five Minute Stress Relief
When we experience stress during the day we can consciously shift our attention to peace, joy, or harmony through a quick visualization or breathing technique. As Wayne Dyer says in The Power of Intention, “I can choose peace rather than this!” Here are a few quick and easy ways of regaining your center and lowering your stress level.
- Find somewhere you can be alone and undisturbed for five minutes.
- Sit comfortably or lie down and close your eyes. Pay attention to your breathing and allow it to deepen.
- Imagine a place you would love to be and notice as many details as you can about that place. What do you see, hear, and feel? Let yourself just enjoy the sensations of your imagination – the color, beauty, and peacefulness that surrounds you!
- Call to mind a person you love very much. Allow your heart to fill with the emotion of gratitude that comes from having this person in your life.
- Relax your face and smile gently. Breathe in and out peacefully for a few moments knowing the gift of loving and being loved.
Take the feelings of peace and love with you as you head back into your day!
I hope these techniques will help you release leftover winter stress so that you can enjoy the full splendor of the spring season in bloom!
